<a href="http://talcum.blogtog.com/archives/3871_1789360482/203430" style="border:0;"><img src="http://my-expressions.com/up_media/2414/pblog/3844/et_1168526123.jpg"/></a><br>
I. Parts List
1. 1 10ft piece of 1in PVC pipe-and 1 8ft piece of 1in PVC pipe-get the one with the thicker wall which is designed for high pressure water-while its unlikely you'll want to distribute water thru your ring light, the extra thickness will help support the hardware your going to hang on it- it will still be pretty light weight
2. eight 1' 45 degree PVC elbows
3. 16 clamp lights- mine are Home Depot skew # 173982330; thety look something like this, they're about $7;
4. 3 power strip outlets having 6 plug-ins
5. 1 can PVC glue
6. 3 hose clamps; you'll be using these to clamp your power strips to the PVC frame; I forgot what size I got, just use the 'yeah this looks big enough' method
7. 1 roll electrical tape-you'll have a mess of wires, and this will help you tidy things up
8. light stant-I'm using an Alien Bee LS 1100; it looks riduculously small for the task at hand, but not to worry, you're building a perfectly balanced precision instrument, so far I haven't tipped the thing over
9. a 1in PVC T fitting; you'll be using this for the base that fits onto the light stand
10. 16 each of 5/8 in hex bolt, 5/8 in nut, 5/8 in washer, and 5/8 n lock washer
11. 16 light bulbs; I'm using 75 watt GE reveal bulbs, really just a tungsten bulb with a white balance of about 2850k
II. Tools Needed
1. saw; power would be nice, but the PVC cuts pretty easily so you could probably hack your way thru by hand
2. power drill with 5/8 bit
3. 5/8 wrench, or pliers or vice grips, anything to tighten down those 5/8 nuts
111. Constrution
1. Cut your PVC into eight 20 inch lenths and one length of about 7.5 inches; your ring light is actually an octogon
2. one of your 20 inch pieces will be modified to make the base; so cut it in half and glue one end of each piece into the horizontal arms of the T fitting; you'll want to keep the overall length of this piece to 20 inches, so trim an equal amount off each end so that the overall length is 20 inches
3. glue the 7.5 inch piece into the vertical arm of the T fitting; this 7.5 inch piece will fit over the light stand
4. on a flat surface completely assemble the hexagon frame using the elbows and the remaining 20 in pieces of PVC; don't glue yet-the PVC glue sets very fast and if one of your elbows is not on a flat plane you'll be screwed
5. now one by one take apart each joint and glue back together, making sure the frame stays flat on the floor
6. now each 20 inch piece has to be drilled twice to accommodate the 16 lights-the holes will be approximately 5 in from each end of the 20in pieces-double check this, you just want the lights more or less evenly spaced, its not rocket science so it doesn't have to be perfect, just make sure the reflectors on the lights don't overlap
9. now you're going to use the hex bolts to attach the lights to the PVC frame-so toss out the spring clamps that came with the lights and put the wahser on the bolt and put the bolt thru the fitting that previously held the spring clamp tighten the wing nut to hold the bolt firmly in place; pass the bolt thru the hole in the PVC, put the lock washer, then the nut, and tighten
10. attach the power strips to the PVC frame using the hose clamps
11. put your bulbs in
12. plug lights in the power strips and using the electrical tape, work your way around the ring binding up the slack in the cords and taping them onto the frame so they're out of the way
13. call your local fire dept and warn them of the impending disaster about to occur at your place
14. power up!
